General subject indexing for Chemical Abstracting began in 1907 and has been expanded, improved, and refined over the years. These changes occurring incrementally reflected the growing complexity of chemical methodology. The development of various indexing policies has been guided by the Editors of Chemical Abstracts with each leaving his own mark on the structure and organisation. The indexing and editing operations have progressed from a purely manual effort to a highly automated one. Chemical Abstracts Service has endeavoured to be responsive to the needs and desires of index users. Hence the development of detailed and comprehensive instructions on the use of the indexes, workshops and workbooks, and presentations and papers on indexing in specific areas of chemistry and chemical engineering.
