Explores the role of paradigms in information retrieval research and discusses the nature of a paradigm and the applicability of the paradigm concept to a multidisciplinary field such as information science. The features of the physical paradigm and the cognitive paradigm are outlined, and their origins, nature, and role are examined. (DB) |

This chapter considers the revolution that has taken place in natural language processing research over the last five years. It begins by providing a brief guide to the structure of the field and then presents a caricature of two competing paradigms of 1980s NLP research and indicates the reasons why many of those involved have now seen fit to abandon them in their pure forms. Attention is then directed to the lexicon, a component of NLP systems which started out as Cinderella but which has finally arrived at the ball. This brings us to an account of what has been going on in the field most recently, namely a merging of the two 1980s paradigms in a way that is generating a host of interesting new research questions. The chapter concludes by trying to identify some of the key conceptual, empirical and formal issues that now stand in need of resolution. (AU) |

Discussion of subject access points in databases concentrates on the broader theoretical perspective. Topics include technology-driven stages in the development of subject access points; a taxonomy of subject access points; document titles; abstracts; references and citations; full text; and descriptors, identifiers, classification codes, and other kinds of access data selected by indexers. (Contains 154 references.) (DB) |

Discusses research dealing with the cognitive aspects of formal systems of knowledge representation. Highlights include the origins and theoretical foundations of the cognitive viewpoint; cognition and information science; cognitivism, mentalism, and subjective individualism; categorization; mental models; and sociocognitive approaches to indexing and abstracting.
