Abstract
Visual documents such as motion sequences on film, videotape, and digital recordings, constitute a major source of information for NASA, as well as other government and private sector organizations. Describes a technique for automatically selecting key frames from visual documents, which in turn may be used to represent the total image sequence of visual documents in visual libraries, hypermedia systems, and training guides. The technique reduces 51 minutes of video sequences to 134 frames; a reduction of information in the range 700 to 1. (DB)

Abstract
Contribution to a special issue on summarizing text. Automatic summarizing is a research topic whose time has come. The papers illustrate some of the relevant work already under way. Places these papers in their wider context: why research and development on automatic summarizing is timely, what areas of work and ideas it should draw on, how future investigations and experiments can be effectively framed.
